Porsche What Car? Electric Car Awards 2022

21/9/2022

The Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo and Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid have won their categories in the What Car? Electric Car of the Year Awards announced today. The Taycan was awarded Best Electric Performance car and the Panamera Best Hybrid Performance car.

The Taycan is the first purely battery electric Porsche sports car and was the top-selling Porsche in the UK in 2021. Fundamental to this success is its mix of performance and everyday usability and fast charging capability. Since its launch in 2019, the Taycan model line-up has grown with the addition of the Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo – both featuring a larger load space and more rear headroom.

Building on the success of the Taycan 4S sports saloon in the 2021 Awards, it was the mix of dynamics and practicality offered by the Taycan 4S Cross Turismo that appealed to the writers from What Car? magazine this year; “Despite this more practical body, combined with a raised ride height compared with the regular Taycan, there’s no danger of the Cross Turismo feeling less wieldy. In fact, if you make use of its various driving modes, it’ll do a startlingly good impression of a sports car, with taut body control and precise steering.”

The Taycan has a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This allows the Taycan to recharge more rapidly: in a little over five minutes, the battery can be recharged using DC direct current for a range of up to 62 miles (according to WLTP). The charging time for five to 80 per cent state of charge is 22.5 minutes under ideal conditions. The maximum DC charging capacity (peak) is 270 kW. Taycan drivers can also charge their cars with up to 22 kW of AC alternating current at home or at public charging stations.

The Taycan 4S Cross Turismo is powered by two electric motors (one per axle). Up to 420 kW (571 PS) overboost power is available, with the 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus returning a WLTP range of up to 304 miles. The sprint to 62 mph takes 4.1 seconds, and top speed is 149 mph. Combined consumption is 21.3 kWh/100 km (WLTP). The Taycan 4S Cross Turismo is priced from £91,000 RRP.

In presenting the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid with the award for Best Hybrid Performance car, the breadth of ability of the car clearly appealed to What Car? magazine. “You get a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine plus an electric motor for a combined 462 PS, with power for the motor provided by a 17.9 kWh battery. If you keep it charged up, you’ll be able to do most journeys without using a drop of petrol.”

The Porsche plug-in hybrid always starts in purely electric ‘E-Power’ and has a range of 30 - 35 miles and a maximum speed of 87 mph in this mode.

Overall, according to the magazine, the Panamera “defies expectations by combining the required performance and luxury.” And in the Porsche tradition, drivers will enjoy “very well-weighted steering that lets you place it with great precision, so it’s a dream to pilot along twisting roads.”

A total system power of 462 PS drives all four wheels, and air suspension balances comfort and agility. The Panamera E-Hybrid can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds and where permitted achieve a top speed of 174 mph. Fuel consumption is 113 - 141.2 mpg, equivalent to 57 - 45 g/km CO2 (WLTP Combined). Combined electrical consumption is 24.4 – 22.6 kWh/100 km. The Panamera 4 E-Hybrid is priced from £86,700.00 RRP.
